About Jack Stuler

Jack H. Stuler was born on August 30, 1932, in Homestead, Pennsylvania, United States. Jack Stuler received a Bachelor of Arts (1960) and a Master of Fine Arts (1963) from the Arizona State University Tempe campus. Jack Stuler taught at Arizona State University since 1972, first as an associate professor (1972-1975), then as a full professor of art. Worked in a medium-format black-and-white and color, he frequently used nature and family as subjects.

Stuler discovered his passion and talent for photography while serving in the Navy as a dental technician during the Korean War. It was through his friendship with Ed Davies, whom Stuler had met in 1951 while they were in dental school, that he was introduced to photography, which would eventually become his life’s work. Their friendship lasted over six decades, and selections from their correspondence will be displayed during the memorial reception, along with fine art prints by Stuler and some of his students. Stuler was the first to earn an MFA in photography at ASU, and he continued to teach here until his retirement in 1997. ASU alum and friend Roze Hanks describes Stuler as a “master photographer, teacher, mystic rebel, humble sage and extraordinary friend, who ran with the likes of Ansel Adams, Bret Weston, Van Deren Coke and Allan Dutton to name a few.”
