About Road Map to Happiness, Pictures of A Street by Wilhelm Schürmann

The photographs we see in road Map to Happiness were taking between 1979 and 1981 on the very same street where Schürmann grew up. This street is in Dortmund, Germany. This book contains the striking black and white images that show the storefronts displays, the living rooms, the facades creating a dynamic, changing portrait of postwar Germany. The photographer explored the different facets of his own background as well as introduced us to a deeply changed country, that was undergoing a complete shift through its streets and through the people who inhabited them.

About Wilhelm Schürmann

Wilhelm Schümann was born in Cologne. He returned from World War I as a pacifist and joined the KPD in 1923. Up to 1933, he worked as an actor at theaters in Hagen, Mülheim/Ruhr, Godesberg, and Düsseldorf. Arrested in 1934 for illegal activities for the KPD, Schürmann-Horster was acquitted by the Hamm higher regional court due to lack of evidence. From 1937 on, he worked freelance for film companies, and from November 1941 as a director and dramaturge at the Grenzlandtheater in Konstanz. His black-and-white shots present homes in the borderland areas of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands – and the buildings really do have their own character. Today, Wilhelm Schürmann is known primarily as a collector and curator of contemporary art. In the early 1990s he stopped taking pictures altogether.
