About A Fair Day

A special book of Photographs - all taken on one day in the West of Ireland. Martin Parr is a chronicler of our age. In the face of the constantly growing flood of images released by the media. His photographs then offer us the opportunity to see the world from his unique perspective. So a text by Fintan O’Toole introduces Martin Parr’s third book – self published by Promenade Press in 1984. Seventy four images capture aspects of life in the Ireland of the early 1980s, including abandoned Morris Minors, rural dance halls, and also newly built bungalows. Parr records a sympathetic portrait of a society caught between both the past and the 20th Century. These images of the west of Ireland in A Fair Day show a culture caught between a Celtic past and the Great American Dream. A book of conflicting images which juxtaposes picturesque views and scenarios with images of dingier particulars, including also an interesting study of abandoned Morris Minor automobiles.
