About
Children of the Flats is an evocative, 100-page social documentary by South African photographer Paul Alberts and author George Gibbs. The work serves to capturing the harsh realities of daily life for children living in the deeply impoverished, racially segregated Cape Flats townships outside of Cape Town—specifically focusing on neighbourhoods like Kewtown, Athlone, Bridgetown, and Silvertown. At the time, these overcrowded areas suffered from systemic neglect due to apartheid policies, lacking proper infrastructure, sewerage, and electricity.
