About Cindy Sherman

This book accompanied a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. This exhibition and therefore this book, includes key examples of her work. Also, it explores the relationship between reality and appearance through Sherman's photographs. This book contains 40 years of Sherman's work. Accordingly, it reviews the themes the artist explores through time as well as the sources she used in order to create her body of work. Full of subversion, parallel realities and imagined identities, the book looks at the nature and the intentions of the artist and how she challenges the viewer with comedic and striking imagery.

About Cindy Sherman

Sherman (1954) is an American photographer and filmmaker. She is best known for her iconic portraits. She uses her work to critique gender and identity, among other themes. Sherman is among the most influential artists of her generation. Often, she is the protagonist of her subversive images, where she creates characters and contexts. Also, she challenges reality by using images from the media and popular culture. Further, she is best known for "Complete Untitled Film Stills," a series of 70 black-and-white photographs which were meant to subvert the stereotypes of women in media. As well as exploring identity, Sherman examines and distorts femininity as a social construct. In order to explore her themes, she creates seductive and luscious compositions. Finally, Sherman works with elements from different sources such as television, magazines, fashion, etc.
