First edition of Document Kouen (Document Park) Vol. 4 by Kohei Yoshiyuki (1980)
Medium format softcover with photographic dust jacket in near fine condition. Light shelf wear around edges and corners of dust jacket and book cover. There are two short closed tears at the top and bottom of dust jacket cover, held together with archival tape. There is a crease across the right side of the front cover, near the spine (see picture 2), and a small crease to the bottom right corner of the back cover. Due to the matte nature of the cover, some faint scuff marks and finger prints are present. Some age toning to the pages and page block. Otherwise, pages clean and binding firm.

About
Document Kouen (Document Park) is a decade-long photographic study conducted by Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki during the 1970s. Focusing on the intersection of public space, intimacy, and surveillance, Yoshiyuki spent nights capturing Tokyo's subterranean park subculture; heterosexual and same-sex couples engaging in clandestine, intimate acts under the cover of darkness in Tokyo's public parks. The defining element of the project is its focus on the peeping Toms (nozoki). The images capture crowds of onlookers creeping out of the bushes, standing inches away from the couples, and sometimes touching them without their awareness.
In The Photobook: A History (Volume II), Martin Parr and Gerry Badger praise it as a "brilliant piece of social documentation, catching perfectly the loneliness, sadness and desperation that so often accompany sexual or human relationships in a big, hard metropolis like Tokyo."
