Incoming
2017
Description
So, Incoming by Richard Mosse deals with the major humanitarian and political plight of our time. In other words, the displacement of millions due to war, persecution and climate change. This 576-page book combines film stills from the artist’s latest video work. Also, the video was made in collaboration with electronic composer Ben Frost and cinematographer Trevor Tweeten. Journeys made by refugees and migrants across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe are captured with a new weapons-grade surveillance technology that can detect the human body from 30.3km. However, blind to skin colour, this camera technology registers only the contours of relative heat difference within a given scene. And by doing so, foregrounding the fragile human body’s struggle for survival in hostile environments.
Artist Bio
Photographer and filmmaker Richard Mosse focuses on war-torn regions. Mosse captures the effects of conflict on landscapes and people in lush, cinematic images. He situates his practice between documentary journalism and contemporary art practice, explaining that he seeks to represent the unrepresentable in order to “help us begin to describe, and thereby account for, what exists at the limits of human articulation.”
