Comprising 120 pages, with 93 mostly full-page reproductions, the book provides a comprehensive overview of Marvin Newman's early black-and-white images between 1949 and 1956. This is the first complete monograph on Newman's work outside of the Taschen edition, which is limited to his colour work only. Newman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with fellow artists Kenneth Josephson, Ray K. Metzker, and Joseph Sterling, under professors such as Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. His multifaceted work, primarily of the major cities of Chicago and New York, is distinguished by his masterful use of light in his nocturnal scenes. He demonstrates a particular affinity for the children and teenagers he encountered during his regular wanderings on the streets. With great empathy, his images reveal the precarious circumstances of his subjects, but also their vitality and often their joy.
