About On Abortion

On Abortion is the first chapter of Abril's project, A History of Misogyny. Here, she draws historical and modern comparisons to document the dangers and damages caused by the lack of legal, safe and free access to abortion. Continuing on with her painstaking research, Abril uses the past to highlight the long, continuous erosion of women's reproductive rights to present day. As a result, her collection of visual, audio and textual evidence weaves a net of questions about ethics and morality. Hence revealing a staggering series of social triggers, stigmas, and taboos around abortion that have been invisible until now.

Artist Bio

Laia Abril (1986) is a research-based artist working with photography, text, video and sound. After graduating from college with a degree in Journalism, she moved to New York to focus on photography. Here, she decided to start telling intimate stories that raise uneasy and hidden realities related to sexuality, eating disorders and gender equality. Then, in 2009, she enrolled the artist residency at FABRICA where she worked as a researcher, photo editor and staff photographer at Colors Magazine for 5 years. Abril’s projects are produced across platforms such as installations, books, web docs, and films. Also, her work has been shown and published internationally where private collections and museums showcase her work.
