About The Democratic Forest

The Democratic Forest is Eggleston's most ambitious project. It gathers more than a thousand photographs in a ten-volume set. Its title refers to the democracy of vision. A paradigm in the photographer's work since he uses this 'democratic vision' to depict mundane subjects and contexts with the complexity and relevance of the elevated and artistic. This set is structured in a sort of autobiographic sequence of work, starting with pictures from Eggleston's hometown and spreading across the US. The final volume goes back to the South, to its cotton fields (like the one he was born in) creating a full circle. This set is a homage to Eggleston's life and work and visits the deeply personal but also the everyday, the banal, the normal that the artist has devoted his life to turn into something beautiful and sublime.

About William Eggleston

William Eggleston (1939, Memphis) is an American photographer. He is widely credited with increasing recognition for colour photography as a legitimate artistic medium. His straightforward depictions of everyday objects and scenes, many of them in the southern United States, were noted for their vivid colours, precise composition and evocative allure. William Eggleston discovered that printing with a dye-transfer process, a practice common in high-end advertising, would allow him to control the colours of his photographs and thereby heighten their effect. In 1974 he got a fellowship from the Guhhenheim and in 1976 he would have his first solo exhibition at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art.
