About
Cindy Konits began photographing herself with an obsolete professional instant camera and expired film after discovering it—unused—almost thirty years after its purchase. The camera’s features enabled slow, meditative self-portraits created in sunlight and shadow, within and between rooms and surrounding landscape. In these images, Konits explores the human experience of psychic space, an interior dimension where experience is felt and held, within the structure of architecture. Psychoanalysis frames the inner experience within the analytic room;. This work extends that idea to architecture itself. Approaching the threshold of a room, a person experiences him/herself to be separate from it. Once inside, however, the room disappears as the self and architecture merge. Noise falls away, attention narrows, and presence comes into focus. The images in this book suggest how architecture shapes sense of self in space and time which are otherwise abstract and limitless. Informed by architectural thinkers such as Juhani Pallasmaa, who describes architecture as a mediation between the world and the mind, This Room Will Survive Me invites viewers to experience rooms inwardly and sense the slow flow of time and memory.
